US president, Donald Trump on Wednesday effectively banned transgender people from serving in the US military.
In a series of tweets posted on his very busy handle @realDonaldTrump, the president said the ban was necessitated by the “medical costs and disruption” transgender people cause.
The US president tweeted;
“After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the US Military.”
“Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you,”he wrote.
Trump’s decision marks a sharp reversal of a policy initiated under Barack Obama, in which the Pentagon ended a longtime ban on transgender people from serving openly in the military.
His move to ban transgender people from the military comes after the Pentagon recently delayed a deadline set by the Obama administration of 1 July 2017 to decide whether incoming recruits who openly identified as transgender could enlist.
Expectedly, the President has been flayed on social media, with many Americans labeling him a ‘coward’ and ‘draft dodger’, while LGBTQ media advocacy organisaiton, GLAAD, accuse him of trying to ‘erase’ their kind from the country.
